There is much confusion about lymphatic drainage massage. That's because there's little to no education about the lymphatic system. in med school, students are taught very little about it, which is very unfortunate because it is a huge part of our immune system and is very complex. I have clients come to me post-op who have been given something that's called lymphatic drainage but it is not. It is NOT pushing fluids post-op through incisions like some do in Miami, Brazil and other countries. After surgery, especially liposuction, your tissue has already been through a lot of trauma. Pushing hard on those areas not only traumatizes more, but is very painful and unnecessary. Lymphatic drainage massage is light and very specific to the direction and flow of the lymph system. The only time it is harder is when a person has lymphedema, the fluid has been stagnate for an extended period of time and turns into adipose tissue. At that time it is necessary to break up the adipose tissue and get the fluid draining again.
